James Collyer
Biography
1948 Born London
1964-68 Studied painting and printmaking at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art. Gained much experience of the intaglio process from his tutor, Peter Olley
1968-69 Studied painting and printmaking at Kingston-upon-Thames College of Art
1969-71 Master Etcher at the studios of Editions Alecto, London. Worked with David Hockney, Patrick Procktor, Ed Ruscha, Colin Self and Norman Stevens
1969-87 Lectured in Fine Art Etching and Intaglio Printmaking at various colleges of fine art including Chelsea College of Art, Exeter School of Art, Wolverhampton Polytechnic, Manchester Polytechnic, Cheltenham College of Art, Ontario College of Art, Canada. Resident Visiting Lecturer at Leeds University Fine Art Faculty
1971-87 Became joint founder of J C Editions Studio (Fine Art Etchers and Intaglio Printmakers), London
Worked with the following painters and sculptors: Ivor Abrahams, Steven Buckley, Robyn Denny, Nigel Hall, David Hockney, John Hoyland, John Loker, Henry Moore, Bryan Organ, David Oxtoby, Eduardo Paolozzi, Tom Philips, Patrick Procktor, Richard Smith, Norman Stevens and David Tindle
Travelled in Canada, USA, Mexico and North Africa
1979-86 Artist Etcher to Henry Moore
1987 J C Editions dissolved
1988 Invited by the British Council and the Henry Moore Foundation to conduct intaglio workshops in Madras and Bangalore; also to act as a consultant for the installation in Bangalore of the 'Henry Moore in India' touring exhibition
1989 Commenced working on own images, concentrating on the luxury of the monoprint, the single statement, incorporating a multi-media approach
1995 Travelled in Mexico
