Roman Halter

I was born in Chodecz, Poland in 1927.

I was the youngest of seven children.

From 1940 until spring 1945 I was in Lodz-ghetto, Auschwitz-Birkenau and Stutthof concentration camps and then was slave labour in a factory in Dresden.

All the Jewish people from my town of Chodecz, including my whole family, were murdered. From 800 Jews who lived there, I and three others survived.

I was brought to the UK in autumn 1945.

Studied architecture and painting. Qualified as an architect and taught architecture for 4 1/2 years. Opened my own practice in London and Cambridge.

Married Susie Nador with whom I had three children - Ardyn, Aloma and Aviva.

From 1974 I recorded my Holocaust experiences and observations in writing and painting.

For a living I painted and occasionally sold some of my paintings, designed and made stained-glass windows and also made, in cast filigree, the Royal Coat of Arms for British Embassies and Crown Courts.

I still paint and write for about three hours each day.
